I AM THE KEY: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LA'S by Matthew Walkerdine

6.00
Self-published

Zine - A4, 40 pages, black and white digital printing throughout, staplebound, risograph cover, various coloured paper stocks throughout.
Cassette - C75 mixtape cassette
Badge - 54mm pin badge, full colour digital printing.
Photo - Digitally printed colour photo print.

A real special one from Glasgow's Matthew Walkerdine. A recent obsession has been The La's. In fact, it was an alternative version of the legendary and only self-titled album by the bad put onto YouTube by a fellow fan. This prompted daily plays, continuous reading, and a wonder as to why he'd never been into this band before.

This publication (made completely non-profit, don't hate Matthew forum folks) was intended as an Introduction for fellow 31 year olds who, as Matthew was told, were late to the party.

The zine contains articles, reprints, ticket stubs, other ephemera to take you on a journey. The cassette collects 23 outstanding La's and Lee Mavers songs spanning between 1987 up to 2005. The badge is for you to wear with pride following your new found glory, and the removable photo-print on the cover you can dote over these cheeky lads.

Not many made, maybe no more.

Thanks for that Kev, it looks great.

I wonder if there's any new quotes or snippets of information about new songs.

Seems like I have a mutual friend with the guy on Facebook. Might be worth seeing if he has the original files for a mini-eBook :D

Why a cassette? I'd see even Lee hated them.

I like the vibe of what is being done, nothing beats receiving something like this by post, it really brings back that feeling, around the mid to late 90s, when you could discuss something by email, but still had to share the music physically. That really suited The La's, there was so little, at the time..

I think I've communicated with the owner of, or scanned, most of those tickets..

Thanks Syl for posting linky ...

I thought it was a very well put together piece ... homework obviously done unlike the usual lazy clichés ...

Ken Sweeney is a decent journo and a former musician with real feel for the music. Loves the La's by all accounts.

His big brother was also in a famous Irish Band of the late 70s (The Vipers) who supported the Jam on Irish dates back in the day.

I like Tom Dunne's taste in music as a DJ ... his band Something Happens had a couple of great tunes back in the 90's as well.

All these great Irish bands and fcuking U2 make it global - there aint no justice.

What Fester said. Those of us originally from Dublin would generally feel similarly.

Quick question on the pronunciation of Maver.

Tom Dunne pronounced it the way I do... May-vers
Sweeney pronouced it... Mah-vers

I never thought it was up for debate, but maybe it is? What is the correct pronunciation?
