Isn't that also the story of John in The La's? ;)

Anyway, if the choice is A) No John, but new Mavers music, or B) No Mavers music,

I am opting for A. There seems to be no option C) where John is involved with Lee doing stuff. Gary's indeed the only choice if he's the only person who can make Lee do something again.

As for Lee vs John Part 94, Zzzz... Music's not a contest. (But then I don't watch X Factor!)

i think it must be rememberd that the times lee has got his stuff together it has been when john has been in and around the band, and as mr leckie says john is one of the most driven people he has ever worked with . That said maybe the Bandit is the key this time around as i remember john also did nothing for along time after cast split until he did a small tour with the Bandit just like lee has

I agree that John was a driven guy and helped Lee out, sometimes you just need that kind of guy around. Even Lillywhite said recently Mavers wasn't a difficult guy to work with, it was just very difficult to gain his confidence.

I'm well aware Liam Tyson played in with Robert Plant, but that just proves the point I was trying to make, I can't ever imagine Barry Sutton playing in the strange sensation.... but not because of lack of ability.

Who cares if some of the ex-members of the La's have 'day jobs' and work as plasterers, that has no bearing on their musical ability what so ever, I think that's a far nastier thing to suggest than anything I have posted.

OJT, you seem to be saying that it's sort of virtuous that the likes of Sutton haven't gone on to play with the likes of Robert Plant, as if to do so would be to 'sell out' (whatever that means) or to lower their standards. If that is what you mean (and I'm aware that I'm putting words in your mouth), I couldn't disagree more. The culture of underachievement that surrounds the La's from Lee down is beyond frustrating. Honestly, if it makes them feel better to say that they could've done this, that or the other if only they'd wanted to, then that's up to them and good luck to them, but I don't see it as artistically noble, more as a rather sad waste of potential and talent.

As for being plasterers, 3 of my closest mates are plasterers and the reason that ex-La's members are probably doing it is that it can earn you a really comfortable living. One of my mates earns twice what I earn as a teacher, so there's clearly nothing wrong with that, and it's certainly more that you'd get from playing half empty bars in liverpool every fortnight billed as 'Ex-La's guitarist/drummer and his new band'.

when I was with Barry for the Beatnik Hurricane gig last June, he had to pay to have the place (Mello Mello, btw) open and had to do the soundchecks, roadie, book the opening act, and door handling by himself, I helped but I'm no roadie to the stars. I don't think he made any money from the gig, in fact it cost him. Always respect him for that. With La's members it's always been about the music which is the band's appeal for me. Sometimes the music doesn't come and you have to put food on the table.

Talking about the La's and day jobs . . . About five years ago, when I was a wee newcomer to the IT game, Barry Sutton rang me for a password reset - we worked in the same building! :D

I wondered how long it'd take...I took it down a few days ago. I listened back to it and replayed it all again in my head; it just doesn't feel right. The man was looking me dead in the eye and two foot away. I can't explain... Apologies.
