Decent little featue that in Mojo. Four star review too but I'm not sure the jazz / doo-wop stuff is gonna do it for us who were into The Stairs / Isrites / Big Kids. We'll see.

Has the release gone back to the 16th now?

Yeh Dancer,
I never thought about the implications of a non-admin person sporting STALIN as a avatar but that would be quite frightening!!!!
Anyway it should be noted that far from trvialising what the man did we are simply trivialising the Man(something which I'm sure he would have hated)and as that's probably the only thing we have against such people then I say "Fine"

"Fine"

Cheers,
Paul

Perhaps it should read above the badge.
I wish I was in......
Or
I wish my band was as respected as.......
Perhaps not!

Cheers,
Paul

New Albums

Postby w1lko » Sun May 08, 2005 12:37 pm

I've got the new Edgar Jones album to review, it's good. Lots of short songs, the doo-wop element crops up a few times, i like it personally. Track 14 ('Oh man thats some shit'), is great.
I've also got the new Paul Hemmings record, which i understand is also reviewed in Mojo ('The Floatation Project'), but I havnt listened to it yet. looks interesting though

I'll just have to hear the doo-wop stuff. Edgar's not afraid to mix it up. He used to end his sets in The Isrites with a samba song, and it was in the same league for a 'we're out of here' song as Resurrection and Looking Glass.

Samba = good. Jazzy title track of new LP (just heard it) = not. Might be a grower. Still looking forward to the album.

Soothing Music

Postby Dan » Fri May 20, 2005 12:44 pm

Picked it up this morning, and..... is it for real?? Its even more derivative than The Stairs and the whole thing sounds half arsed. The production, or lack of is embarrasing, the vocals are horrible and the whole performance is a bit.... shit. Really disappointed in it... of all the projects he's been involved in, how does this one get to release?

i like it. i think the production (or lack of) is one of the best things about it. no one else is making music like it

the whole lo fi thing is (a) how its meant to sound, like those hissy old 78s and vinyl jazz/soul records edgar loves... also, considering the bulk of it was done at home on a 20 year old cassette 8 track and old microphones, its never going to have digital clarity - and if it did that wouldnt really work with the type of music it is...

i personally think its a great little LP, much mellower than his old garage/psych past, he's just slowing down and basing more emphasis on groove and feel over full on fuzz and frantic pace...
