Big Influence on Lee and John, circa 82/83/84 - Candy Opera

Liverpool band "Candy Opera". They released two stunning demos, turned down Rough Trade, then disappeared into the obscurity of Prescot Road / Kensington. Labelled by some as little more than Aztec Camera / Pale Fountains / Beach Boys / Love copyists, they were a big influence on the young(ish) Mavers and Power. Any of you scouse 40-somethings recall this band, or have any material?

The lad who does the Everton fanzine "When Skies are Grey" has got some Candy Opera stuff. I'll have a word. There were rumours that Marina (?) records were trying to get hold of the singer, Paul Malone, with a view to releasing a song called "With Yesterday in all the Right Places", from Candy Opera's 1st demo. Not sure what happened there, though.

Just what I have about the band.

Taken from Klaus Schwartze's - The Scouse phenomenon Part 2.

FROM GOOGLE

Candy Opera – acoustic band (formed 1982), feat; Paul Malone (voc), Ken Moss (gtr), Mike Wiggins (bass), Ian Haskell (drms). Within a year Ken left and Paul moved to gtr with Colette Roy (voc) joining. Rel demo ‘Honeysuckle Rose’ (Sep83) with Carl Hodgson (gtr), Steve Lea (keys), Bryan Evans (clar). Ken rejoined in 1985 and they rel 5 track demo ‘Serious’ (Aug85). Lee Mavers (La’s) cited Paul as a big influence on him. Also feat Alan Currie (drms), Frank Mahon (bass) (both ex Come in Tokio, later Wailing Souls) at some point.

More on Paul Malone. http://link2wales.co.uk/liverpool-n-z/liverpool-w/
Wailing Souls – band (c1991), feat; Alan Currie (drms), Frank Mahon (bass) (both ex Come in Tokio, Candy Opera), Paul Malone, Brian Smithers. Became a much saught after band and Gordon Charlton of EMI invited them to record endless demos in London, unfortunately Gordon had a panic attack at a rehearsal in L’pool and became ill; the band split.

Obviously no relation to Jamaican reggae vocal group with same name.
